Former Italian prime minister Giuseppe Conte was present at the unveiling of the statue, which is a depiction of a poem from 1857 written by Luigi Mercantini titled, La Spigolatrice di Sapri. -
2.
The story tells the tale of a woman who falls in love with Carlo Pisacane, a real Italian figure who was one of Italy’s first socialist and anarchist thinkers. -
3.
Instead of depicting Pisacane, who was eventually killed after failing to start a revolution against the Kingdom of Naples, the statue is of a gleaner - a woman who collected grains after the harvest. -
4.
Yet many people noticed that this depiction of a gleaner was a bit more sexualized than their historical counterparts. Many people spoke out against the statue, as it neither displays the truth written about in the original poem and rather overly sexualizes women, seemingly needlessly. -
5.
Of course people online were quick to make jokes, because well, that’s what the internet is for. And while some joked, others pointed out in recent years there have been a number of pretty bad statues made, most notable the Cristiano Ronald bust that sits in the Madeira airport in Portugal. -

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of Women with Phat Asses, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under ASS, indivisible, with booty cheeks and reverse cowgirl for all." -
7.
While we don't condone the "over-sexualization of women" we are in support of this sexy statue. Just think of all the hard work that went into making this woman so, realistic. We aren't saying to you to feel the same way, just make sure you aren't stepping over the hard work of the craftsmen who poured their heart and soul into their work. -
